Damit sehen Sie Ihren Sparerfolg sofort.

Heizkosten-Check starten →Checking Your Heating Cost Statement 2026: Deadlines, Common Errors and Your Rights
Your heating cost statement has arrived – and the additional payment is higher than expected? Checking it is worthwhile. Many statements contain formal errors, incorrectly allocated costs or missing information. These are the points you should check in just a few minutes.
1. Did the statement arrive on time?
As a tenant, you must receive the statement no later than twelve months after the end of the billing period (§ 556 Abs. 3 BGB). If the period ended on December 31, 2025, the deadline is therefore December 31, 2026. If the statement arrives later, the landlord can generally no longer demand an additional payment – unless he is not responsible for the delay. You must still receive any credit balance.
You can raise objections to a statement up to twelve months after receiving it.
2. Are costs allocated correctly by consumption?
Under the Heating Costs Ordinance (Heizkostenverordnung), 50 to 70% of heating and hot water costs must generally be allocated by consumption, with the remainder allocated by living area (§ 7 HeizkostenV). Look for the allocation key in the statement.
If costs are not billed by consumption at all, tenants may reduce their share by 15% (§ 12 HeizkostenV).
3. Are the CO₂ costs split?
Since 2023, landlords and tenants share the CO₂ costs for gas and heating oil according to a tiered model (Carbon Dioxide Cost Allocation Act, CO2KostAufG): the worse the building performs, the more the landlord bears – up to 95%. The statement must show the CO₂ emissions and the split. If the split is missing, tenants may reduce their share of the heating costs by 3% (§ 7 Abs. 4 CO2KostAufG).
4. Does your consumption fit the building?
Convert your consumption to a per-area figure. As a rough guide (characteristic value as in the energy performance certificate based on consumption):
- under 100 kWh/m² per year: good range
- 100 to 160 kWh/m²: medium range – savings can usually be made here without investment
- over 160 kWh/m²: high – there is a lot of potential here
A jump compared with the previous year may be due to the weather, but also to reading errors or estimates. If the statement says "estimated" instead of "read", it is worth asking about.
5. Is the price right?
Compare the price per kilowatt hour with the average. If it is significantly higher, switching tariffs is worthwhile if you have your own heating. In multi-family buildings, you can ask the property management about the purchase price – it is passed on to everyone.
6. Your rights as a tenant
- Inspection of records: You may inspect the invoices and meter reading records on which the statement is based.
- Monthly consumption information: If you have remotely readable meters, you are entitled to monthly consumption information (§ 6a HeizkostenV). This lets you see your savings success immediately.
