KfW 458: Was jedes Halbjahr Warten konkret kostet – die Degression ab Februar 2027
WE) |
|---|---|
| Bis 31.01.2027 | 28.000 € |
| 01.02.2027 – 31.07.2027 | 27.250 € |
| 01.08.2027 – 31.01.2028 | 26.500 € |
| 01.02.2028 – 31.07.2028 | 25.750 € |
| 01.08.2028 – 31.01.2029 | 25.000 € |
Stufe 1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bis 31.01.2027 | 16 % | 28.000 € | 46 % | 12.880 € | – |
| 01.02.2027–31.07.2027 | 12 % | 27.250 € | 42 % | 11.445 € | −1.435 € |
| 01.08.2027–31.01.2028 | 8 % | 26.500 € | 38 % | 10.070 € | −2.810 € |
| 01.02.2028–31.07.2028 | 4 % | 25.750 € | 34 % | 8.755 € | −4.125 € |
| Ab 01.08.2028 | 0 % | 25.000 € | 30 % | 7.500 € | −5.380 € |
Stufe 1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bis 31.01.2027 | 28.000 € | 30 % + 16 % + 40 % = 86 %, gedeckelt auf 80 % | 22.400 € | – |
| 01.02.2027–31.07.2027 | 27.250 € | 30 % + 12 % + 40 % = 82 %, gedeckelt auf 80 % | 21.800 € | −600 € |
| 01.08.2027–31.01.2028 | 26.500 € | 30 % + 8 % + 40 % = 78 % | 20.670 € | −1.730 € |
| 01.02.2028–31.07.2028 | 25.750 € | 30 % + 4 % + 40 % = 74 % | 19.055 € | −3.345 € |
| Ab 01.08.2028 | 25.000 € | 30 % + 0 % + 40 % = 70 % | 17.500 € | −4.900 € |
Fazit: Drei parallele Uhren ticken gleichzeitig

KfW 458: What Waiting Every Half-Year Specifically Costs – Degression Starting February 2027
Starting February 1, 2027, three parameters in KfW 458 (Heating Funding for Private Individuals) will decrease simultaneously: The Climate Speed Bonus drops by 4 percentage points, the maximum eligible cost amount for the first residential unit falls by €750 – and in addition, a restructuring of the basic funding for heat pumps has been announced starting Q1 2027. Anyone submitting their application by January 31, 2027 secures around €1,435 more grant funding in the standard case (owner-occupier, no income bonus) than with an application submitted from February 1, 2027 onward – with every further half-year of delay, the gap widens.
This article provides the specific graduated tables and a fully calculated example for all four degression stages up to August 2028. The basis is KfW leaflet Grant 458 (as of 07/2026) and the KfW product page (as of October 3, 2026).
Overview of the Three Degression Mechanisms
Since July 21, 2026, new terms have applied to KfW 458 (from KfW, the German state development bank). Starting February 1, 2027, three parallel reductions will take effect, which become effective on February 1 and August 1 of each year, respectively:
1. Climate Speed Bonus: −4 Percentage Points per Half-Year
The Climate Speed Bonus rewards owner-occupiers who replace a still-functional fossil-fuel heating system (oil, coal, gas floor heating, night storage heaters – of any age; or gas/biomass heating at least 20 years old). Currently, it stands at 16% of eligible costs.
Degression according to KfW Leaflet 458:
- Until 31.01.2027: 16%
- 01.02.2027 – 31.07.2027: 12%
- 01.08.2027 – 31.01.2028: 8%
- 01.02.2028 – 31.07.2028: 4%
- From 01.08.2028: completely discontinued
The decisive factor is exclusively the date of application submission, not the date of installation or final inspection.
2. Maximum Eligible Cost Amount for 1st Residential Unit: −€750 per Half-Year
The maximum amount of eligible costs for the first residential unit is currently €28,000. Starting February 1, 2027, it decreases semi-annually by €750 – down to €22,000 by the end of 2030:
| Application date | Maximum eligible costs (1st RU) |
|---|---|
| Until 31.01.2027 | €28,000 |
| 01.02.2027 – 31.07.2027 | €27,250 |
| 01.08.2027 – 31.01.2028 | €26,500 |
| 01.02.2028 – 31.07.2028 | €25,750 |
| 01.08.2028 – 31.01.2029 | €25,000 |
| … until end of 2030 | €22,000 |
For the second through sixth residential units (€15,000 each) and starting from the seventh residential unit (€8,000 each), this degression does not apply according to the current KfW leaflet.
3. Basic Heat Pump Funding: Restructuring Announced from Q1 2027
Additionally, the BEG (Federal Funding for Efficient Buildings) funding guideline of July 17, 2026 specifies that the basic funding for heat pumps will drop from 30% to 15% starting in the first quarter of 2027. At the same time, heat pumps originating in the European Union are intended to receive an EU value creation bonus of 15 percentage points, meaning that EU-manufactured units would mathematically continue to reach 30% total funding. Units without EU manufacturing, however, will lose 15 percentage points of basic funding.
Note: KfW has not yet definitively confirmed the exact start date of this restructuring (as of October 3, 2026). For non-heat pump heating systems (e.g. pellet boilers), different regulations may apply – check the current version of KfW Leaflet 458.
The Complete Staged Table: Standard Case Owner-Occupier without Income Bonus
The following example shows an owner-occupier who replaces a functioning gas heating system that is over 20 years old with an air-to-water heat pump (EU manufacturing). The investment costs exceed the maximum eligible cost amount, so the respective maximum amount serves as the calculation basis.
| Application period | Climate Bonus | Maximum eligible costs | Total rate | Grant | Loss vs. Stage 1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Until 31.01.2027 | 16% | €28,000 | 46% | €12,880 | – |
| 01.02.2027–31.07.2027 | 12% | €27,250 | 42% | €11,445 | −€1,435 |
| 01.08.2027–31.01.2028 | 8% | €26,500 | 38% | €10,070 | −€2,810 |
| 01.02.2028–31.07.2028 | 4% | €25,750 | 34% | €8,755 | −€4,125 |
| From 01.08.2028 | 0% | €25,000 | 30% | €7,500 | −€5,380 |
Calculation: Basic funding 30% + Climate Speed Bonus (respective stage), applied to the currently applicable maximum eligible cost amount. Without income bonus, EU manufacturing assumed. Own calculation based on KfW Leaflet 458 (07/2026).
Between today's maximum (application until January 31, 2027) and the final time window with the Climate Bonus (01.02.–31.07.2028), the difference thus amounts to more than €4,100 – simply by waiting.
Calculation Example with Income Bonus: Family, Taxable Income €38,000, One Child
Even those who can make use of the income bonus and the family allowance lose money by waiting:
Scenario: Owner-occupier, taxable income (zvE) €38,000, one minor child → the relevant income is reduced by a flat rate of €10,000 to €28,000 → income bonus 40%. Because the income with a child is under €40,000, the cap of 80% applies (otherwise 70%).
| Application period | Maximum eligible costs | Funding rate | Grant | Loss vs. Stage 1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Until 31.01.2027 | €28,000 | 30% + 16% + 40% = 86%, capped at 80% | €22,400 | – |
| 01.02.2027–31.07.2027 | €27,250 | 30% + 12% + 40% = 82%, capped at 80% | €21,800 | −€600 |
| 01.08.2027–31.01.2028 | €26,500 | 30% + 8% + 40% = 78% | €20,670 | −€1,730 |
| 01.02.2028–31.07.2028 | €25,750 | 30% + 4% + 40% = 74% | €19,055 | −€3,345 |
| From 01.08.2028 | €25,000 | 30% + 0% + 40% = 70% | €17,500 | −€4,900 |
In the first two stages, the 80% cap applies; the loss there arises solely from the declining cost basis. From August 2027 onward, the sum of the rates is below 80%, so the decreasing Climate Speed Bonus has an additional effect.
What Needs to Be Considered for Application Submission?
- Application before project commencement: When submitting the application, a supply or service agreement with the specialist contractor must already exist, concluded subject to the condition precedent or subsequent of funding approval. A contract without this condition is considered the start of the project and disqualifies the funding. The application date is the decisive cut-off date for degression.
- Specialist contractor and Energy Efficiency Expert: The heating system must be installed by a specialist contractor. For applying under KfW 458, an Energy Efficiency Expert (EEE) is not mandatory, but an EEE can help avoid application errors in complex projects.
- Technical minimum requirements: The new installation must meet the technical requirements of the BEG funding guideline (e.g. minimum seasonal performance factor for heat pumps).
- Non-repayable grant: KfW 458 provides a direct grant – not a loan, no repayment required.
- Combination with state funding programs: Many federal states and municipalities offer complementary programs. Combining funding is generally possible, provided the total funding rate does not exceed statutory caps.
Conclusion: Three Parallel Clocks Are Ticking at Once
The degression in KfW 458 is not an abstract future scenario, but legal reality effective February 1, 2027 (KfW Leaflet 458, BEG EM guideline [Federal Funding for Efficient Buildings - Individual Measures] of August 17, 2026, Federal Gazette BAnz AT 27.08.2026). The Climate Speed Bonus, the maximum eligible cost amount, and – for heat pumps – the basic funding run down in parallel. Property owners who are already planning their heating system replacement should submit their application as early as possible. Every half-year of delay costs over €1,400 in the standard case, and in the extreme case (without Climate Bonus from August 2028) more than €5,000 less in funding than possible today.
Have your individual funding case reviewed by a dena-certified (German Energy Agency) energy efficiency expert – so that no bonus and no maximum eligible amount are lost.
