Was wirklich spart
Was nur blinkt
Was gefördert wird
| Weg | Was | Zuschuss | Voraussetzung |
|---|---|---|---|
Förderantrag stellen lassen →Smart Home and Energy Saving: What Really Saves – and What Is Funded
Status as of July 21, 2026.
Smart home technology promises a lot: the heating thinks along, the lights turn off by themselves, the refrigerator checks in via app. Only a portion of this actually saves energy – and precisely that portion is subsidised by the government. The rest is convenience with permanent power consumption.
What really saves
- Controlling the heating: Individual room control, scheduled timers, setback during absence, and window-open detection. Heating is the largest energy item in the household – this is where the greatest leverage lies.
- Controlling shading: Smart roller shutters and blinds make use of solar heat in winter and keep heat outside in summer.
- Making consumption visible: Energy management with metering and control, for instance to run appliances when your own PV system generates electricity.
- Switching off standby: Switchable power outlets disconnect devices that no one needs at night anyway.
What only blinks
- Vacuum robots, video doorbells, and smart speakers provide comfort, but no savings. Every connected device itself consumes electricity around the clock.
- Studies sometimes cite high savings potential; the Fraunhofer Institute, for example, mentions up to 36%. This is the upper limit under favourable conditions, not the normal case. The decisive factors are the initial condition of the house and how consistently the technology is used.
What is funded
Smart home technology can be funded via two routes under the BEG individual measures (BEG-EM - Federal Funding for Efficient Buildings: Individual Measures) administered by BAFA (Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control):
| Route | What | Subsidy | Prerequisite |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heating optimisation | Individual room temperature controllers, optimisation of control technology | 15 % | Heating system older than 2 years, fossil fuel systems no more than 20 years old, maximum 5 residential units, hydraulically balanced system |
| Building services engineering – "Efficiency Smart Home" | Digital systems for operational and consumption optimisation, measurement, control and regulation technology, improvement of grid-serving capability | 15 % | Existing building, Technical Minimum Requirements (TMA) of the BEG EM |
With a funded renovation roadmap (iSFP), the eligible cost ceiling for the 1st residential unit increases from €30,000 to €60,000; the additional 5 percentage points apply only to the share of costs above €30,000.
Pure comfort, security, or entertainment technology is not eligible for funding. What is included in individual cases is governed by the TMA – we verify this prior to submitting the application.
The sequence is critical
- Obtain an offer from a specialist company and conclude a contract with a condition precedent or subsequent regarding the funding commitment.
- Submit the application to BAFA prior to project commencement.
- Installation by the specialist company, followed by submission of the invoice and proof of use.
Important: Starting the project before submitting the application rules out funding. The smart thermostat that is already hanging on the radiator may be smart – but it is no longer eligible for funding.
In short
Smart home saves energy where it controls heating, shading, and electricity consumption. Exactly this technology is subsidised with 15% – provided that the application is made before installation.
