Fördermittel kombinieren: Was zusammen geht und was sich ausschließt
Was sich kombinieren lässt
| Kombination | Möglich? |
|---|---|
Was oft übersehen wird

Combining funding: what works together and what is mutually exclusive
There are four levels of funding. Not all of them can be added together — and a mistake here costs real money.
The four levels
- BAFA (Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control) — grants for individual measures (BEG EM, the Federal Funding for Efficient Buildings – Individual Measures)
- KfW (state-owned development bank) — loans with repayment subsidy for full renovation (261/262) and heating (458)
- State programs — depending on the federal state (in Bavaria there is currently no grant program for owner-occupied houses; the 10,000 Houses Program ended in 2022)
- Tax reduction under § 35c EStG (Income Tax Act) — 20% over three years
The most important rule
Grants and tax reductions are mutually exclusive. For the same measure, you cannot use both. You have to choose.
Rule of thumb: With funding rates above 20 percent, the grant is almost always better. The tax bonus is mainly worthwhile if you receive no funding — for example because you submitted the application too late or narrowly miss the technical minimum requirements.
What can be combined
| Combination | Possible? |
|---|---|
| BAFA grant + state program | usually yes, observe upper limits |
| KfW heating funding (458) + BAFA grant for a different measure | yes |
| BAFA individual measure + KfW efficiency house (261) for the same measure | no |
| BAFA grant + § 35c for the same measure | no |
| Heating funding + individual measure for the building envelope | yes, separate applications |
| iSFP bonus + basic funding | yes, they add up |
Keep the upper limit in view
When federal and state funds are combined, a cap on total funding almost always applies. It is often 60 or 70 percent of the eligible costs. Anyone who applies for both without checking this will, in case of doubt, face a reduction — in the worst case after approval.
The order matters
Submit the federal application first, then the state application. Many state programs require a federal approval notice or offset it against their funding. The reverse rarely works.
What is often overlooked
Value-added tax is eligible for funding for private individuals, but not for businesses entitled to deduct input tax. And: for DIY work, only the material costs are eligible — and only if an energy efficiency expert or specialist contractor confirms that the work was carried out properly.
We check which combination gives you the highest funding in your case — before you apply for anything.
